Amazon Prison

It’s All In Your head

At eight months pregnant with baby number eight, I challenged myself to do something fun and great.

I applied to work for Amazon for their seasonal job back in 2018.

Do you call that fun? You might ask. If you aren’t a parent yet, you won’t quietly understand but read it anyway because you’ll see the whole picture one day when you become a parent.

As you become a parent going to the shower alone becomes a mini-vacation for some of us, let alone going to Amazon.

Background check and all the paperwork was complete. Excitement with how everything went smooth, I was eagerly looking forward to starting my new adventure job.

Mini Circle Prisons

They had us work in these metal racks (which looked like bookshelves that had wheels) we formed into a circle formation that had labels for each box we received to stack up accordingly.

My lovely lady bump was worrying a lot of people. “Zahra, are you sure you can carry this heavy box”? Thoughtful and kind people were my coworkers. I got this, Warrior that’s who I am.

Somedays, there would be many boxes to stack up on those racks, and we’d have to be quick like robot dancers. We’d have to stand on our feet for 4 hours long and rest for 15 minutes break time.

But, my energy level was on cloud nine. Every time I entered the Amazon warehouse, I felt happiness. Most of the people there were truly amazing and genuine. I remember this moment where this guy saw me and said:

“I was having a long hard day, and I couldn’t wait for the day to end, but the sparkles of your scarf shined on my face, and somehow your energy just made me feel better.”

His message had me laughing, and it made my day!

My imagination would strike when I was inside the circle of the metal racks aka mini circle prisons ( I gave them that name)

For me, it was like being in the boxing ring. It reminded me of all the mental wars I fought; it reminded me that no matter how many times I got stuck or failed, I still stand, and I am fighting to make a difference.

I’d cry and feel those moments of affirmation.

It’s All In Your Head

Choice. One power you have no one can EVER take it away from you. You can choose how certain situations can make you feel. I’ve gotten other vibes from others that “I should be resting, and working at a warehouse doesn’t look good on you.”

Screw that! Heck, I willingly signed up. The inner child inside me was like: it is about time we fly out of here — mini work vacation.

In my head, work was happiness even though I knew it was just seasonal. I made that choice to attach excitement, affirmations of my surroundings, and have fun.

Saying Goodbye

The season came to an end. We all got called to the cafeteria. Only a few seasonal workers received a permanent job while most of us had to say our goodbyes.

Our supervisor was strict, but I saw another side of her I didn’t see all the past four months I was there.

Tears started to roll down her face as she read the termination letter to all of us. She said she fought for us to stay longer, but they were short of jobs.

Everybody got up and just left. I sensed how pissed and unhappy my coworkers were. It’s human nature to feel that way. I don’t blame them…I mean, what would others expect? For them to do a happy breakdance and go like: hell yes we got terminated, hands in the air, slide to the left, now drop like is hot!.

That wasn’t me writing — It was the crazy Zahra. I am back.

I stood up and went to give my supervisor a big hug. I said, thank you for everything you’ve done for us. When God closes one door, there are countless doors bigger than the one that was closed awaiting us. I am going to be rich, very rich, and I am going to come back here and do an amazing thing for you.”

It started to rain outside. Rain is always a sign of blessings and mercy, and I knew another door was going to sprout off the many blessings God has for all of us waiting!
